What is a HEIC file?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the photo format iPhones and iPads use by default. It stores photos at about half the size of JPG with similar quality, and can hold extras such as Live Photo frames and depth data. Apple devices and macOS open it natively, but Windows, many Android apps and most websites and upload forms still don't, which is why HEIC photos often need converting to JPG.
What is a JPG file?
JPG (or JPEG) is the most common format for photos. It uses lossy compression, discarding detail the eye barely notices, so photos become small files that open in every app, browser and phone. It has no transparency, and repeated editing and re-saving gradually lowers quality, so it suits finished photos rather than graphics with sharp text.

Frequently asked questions
What is a HEIC file?
HEIC is the format iPhones and iPads use for photos since iOS 11. It makes photos about half the size of JPG, but Windows, Android apps and many websites can't open it.
Are my iPhone photos uploaded to convert them?
No. The HEIC decoder runs inside your browser, so your photos never leave your device. It downloads once, about 3 MB, the first time you convert a HEIC photo.
How do I stop my iPhone saving HEIC?
In the iPhone Settings app, open Camera › Formats and choose Most Compatible. New photos are then saved as JPG.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. HEIC to JPG Converter runs entirely in your browser, so your files stay on your device. Nothing is uploaded, stored or seen by anyone else.
Is HEIC to JPG Converter free?
Yes. It is completely free, with no sign-up and no watermarks.
