What is a JPG file?

JPG (or JPEG) is the most common format for photos. It uses lossy compression, discarding detail the eye barely notices, so photos become small files that open in every app, browser and phone. It has no transparency, and repeated editing and re-saving gradually lowers quality, so it suits finished photos rather than graphics with sharp text.

What is a PNG file?

PNG is a lossless image format: it stores every pixel exactly, so text, logos, screenshots and line art stay crisp. It supports transparent backgrounds, which makes it the usual choice for logos and icons. The trade-off is size: photos saved as PNG are often several times larger than the same photo as JPG.

Will converting JPG to PNG improve quality?

No. PNG stores the image without further loss, but it can't bring back detail the JPG compression already removed. It stops the quality getting worse with each edit.

Why is my PNG bigger than the JPG?

PNG is lossless, so photos take more space than in JPG. That is normal; use PNG when an app requires it or you plan to keep editing.

Can I make the background transparent?
